Ok so we decided to broaden our horizons and try a cuisine that we have never tried before, we must admit, it was the name of the restaurant that initially attracted us to this place. Gay Hussar is a Hungarian restaurant.
We found the restaurant pricy for what it was – don’t get me wrong the food wasn’t particularly bad or anything but hardly fine dining! So anyway, the restaurant this time was thankfully really easy to find so there was no aching limbs or shouting at people to move out the way. Arrived at the restaurant with time to spare before our booking, as soon as we walked in we were welcomed to possibly the smallest restaurant in the world. It was like an old fashioned living room that was cluttered with books and photos and made worse by the fact it was painted in a stifling deep red. As the place was so small everyone stares at you as you enter and continue to do so until seated as you are basically standing over everyone’s shoulders. When we were seated we were placed on a table that was facing a wooden wall; which was literally 60cm’s a way if that! (Thank god this wasn’t a romantic meal)
So onto the food, we had Hungarian Hors d’oeuvres for Starters, it didn’t look very appetising but we got the chance to try a few different kinds of Hungarian starters which is what counts I guess. Mains we had Veal Goulash with Galuska and Crispy Roast Duck with Potatoes, Red Cabbage & Apple Sauce, again it all looked a tad sloppy but the food was edible. To finish the evening off we had Sorbet – Lemon, Mango, Passion Fruit and Mixed Berry Pudding which was the nicest part of the meal.
I know we haven’t gone into much detail about the food this time, just purely because there really wasn’t much to say about it, it was just, edible really. Given the choice we both decided it wasn’t worth visiting again, food was so so and over priced however on a plus point, the staff were very attentive and helpful thought it doesn’t justify a second visit. It was still an enjoyable evening seeing as “someone” decided to embarrass the death out of me. No names mentioned.
