Located in the back streets of Chancery Lane is the aptly named restaurant The Chancery. This restaurant; though only five minutes from the Chancery Lane tube station is well off the beaten track, so tourists are scarce. The Chancery is a small modern French restaurant that has two floors; one for the restaurant and the other the bar.
We were taken to our seats by a French waiter (who was training but very professional), and given our menus. The food was French inspired e.g small portions, beautiful presentation and brilliant flavour combinations. There was only a set menu but had ample choices. We chose to have a three course option (it would have been rude not too, no?).
We were given warm bread, one brown and one white (I am not sure what we would have done if we both had chosen the one white one) and an amuse Bouche of Wild Mushroom Volute. The mushroom flavour really hit the palette and clearly intensified by the dried mushrooms.
For starter, we had Salmon Roulette which had Gravlax Salmon with a tight Salmon Roll in the centre of the plate that was rolled in Dill accompanied by a Truffle Dressing. We also had Crab and Prawn Linguine which was in a Lemon Sauce. Both were delicious and well flavoured.
For mains, we both had Venison with Blueberry Compote and Chocolate. It arrived beautifully presented and the blueberries were a real treat when they burst in the mouth with the rare meat. The chocolate; however, was over sweet and placed alone in a cold hard ball. It did not seem to go well with the meat which was strange as it is usually a nice combination which we have had on a number of occasions. That aside, it was a well crafted dish.
Dessert, we had a Mint and Chocolate Soufflé and a Banana Crème Brulee. Both were magnificent, sweet and strong flavoured.
We left the restaurant very satisfied; the service was French excellence, the price pleasantly less French in price tag and food clearly thought through. The lack of food on the plate although usually avoided was less daunting as we had the volute and three courses.
