These do not have to be the flashiest or high-class restaurants but just those that we hope will satisfy us the most. The Elephant in Brixton Village Market serves authentic pakistani street food at a very low price. The thalis served on a segmented stainless steel plate, in the subcontinental way, are quite possibly the most accomplished in town.
Etta’s Caribbean background infuses the atmosphere and when you walk into Etta’s Kitchen you get the feeling you’re in for a surprise. Although there is a simple menu, Etta prides herself on being able to tailor the food to your preferred taste.
Shimogamo is a small Japanese restaurant in Camden, which serves sushi and sashimi, sukiyaki (hotpots), teriyaki skewers, gyoza dumplings, Japanese salads, soba or udon noodles, as well as chef’s specials. All the dishes are artfully presented and the quality is supposed to be impeccable.

The name is odd, as is much about this Battersea haunt. Mismatched chandeliers, and candles wedged-in bottles, vie with a ‘Mediterranean’ menu random enough to keep even regulars on their toes. But weirdest of all are the prices, kept down by the every-day set menus.
Red House is the latest offering from the people behind Bill’s Food & Drink in New York. Deep tufted banquettes wrap the restaurant, while art filled walls are illuminated from light that streams through the windows. The brasserie-style menu recognises classic English tradition infused with American Mediterranean charm.
Chef Patron Taylor Bonnyman, working in collaboration with Head Chef Marguerite Keogh, offer elegant and playful modern British cooking with an emphasis on native British artisanal produce.
Christopher’s, a stalwart of American cuisine in Covent Garden offers a menu that incorporates innovative Stateside staples such as fine USDA cuts and Surf ‘n’ Turf. A brunch menu featuring popular American dishes such as Steak and Eggs, the signature Eggs Maryland and Buttermilk Pancakes is also offered.
At French Bubbles you can pair 25-award-winning grower Champagnes alongside plates of rustic French fare in the bistro ‘Chez Moi’. Menu highlights include Frogs’ legs and snails, alongside cheese and charcuterie boards and a selection of tempting desserts.
LIMA creates authentic Peruvian dishes in a clean and contemporary style. Light healthy and very tasty!
The restaurant is situated over 2 floors with a ground floor space which doubles as a bright and bustling cafe/deli by day and a lovely wine bar by night. The downstairs dining room is a more elegant space perfect for a sit down lunch or dinner or for private events and large parties.
At Mishkin’s it’s all about food, cocktails and music. The boundaries in Mishkin’s origins are as ambiguous as the menu’s influences. The dishes are based very loosely on the sort of Jewish comfort food we all love eating. Where possible Mishkin’s uses amazing local producers.
The Opera Tavern is a beautiful two-storey bar and restaurant in Covent Garden, which seduces diners with its Italian and Spanish influenced tapas and perfectly pitched Spanish/Italian wine list. It has a charcoal grill on the ground floor where are cooked up delicious meaty treats such as mini Ibérico pork and foie gras burger.
Barnyard’s rustic theme is felt through its interior fitted out with reclaimed timber and corrugated tin while indie folk, country and blues are predominantly on the playlist. Barnyard dishes include homemade sausage rolls with piccalilli, roast beef on toast with warm horseradish buttermilk, and sweets such as apple and cloudberry crumble with clotted cream, and bananas and custard. Barnyard tipples include Hedgerow Shandy (sloe gin, cider, pink grapefruit & tonic), boilermakers, homemade lemonade and unusual milkshakes, such as popcorn and lavender, all served either virgin or alcoholic.
Buenos Aires Restaurant in Fulham offers an authentic Argentinian dining experience. Famous for its steaks and punchy wine list, the Restaurant also caters for vegetarians and tapas fans. The crowd is an eclectic mix of Fulham foodies, business types and families.
This spacious modern café bar offers a delicious menu, which draws inspiration from a wide range of cuisines, with a focus on fresh seasonal ingredients that are GM-free and responsibly sourced. Everything is made freshly on the premises and cooked to order.
Hampstead/Chalk Farm/Kentish town
The Bull and Last is a rustic style gastropub that serves traditional British food using smartly assembled ingredients. The menu offers bags of variety, from beer-battered haddock to pumpkin ravioli or char-grilled lamb rump with caramelised artichokes and girolles.
The Hill is close to Hampstead and is a firm favourite amongst the local community. The menu offers a variety of seafood and American dishes alongside a comprehensive wine and cocktail list. The garden is well lit and has a covered area making The Hill an ideal choice for alfresco dining in the warmer months.
Once one of Kentish Town’s less appealing pubs, the Grafton reopened in autumn 2012 with new management. It took the new owners a while to figure out what they wanted to do about food, but they’ve now hit on a happy solution. The Fat Butcher, aka Will Dee, has worked at St John among other gaffs, and the influence shows: fairly simple cooking emphasising fine ingredients (listed in detail on the twice-daily-changing menu).
Mango Room is about serving delicious and wholesome food with clean and stylish presentation that puts it above other Caribbean restaurants.
Holborn/Tottenham Court Road
Restaurateur Jason Atherton has had a great year. Berners Tavern is the third restaurant he’s opened in the West End this year; the other two, Little Social and Social Eating House, were very well received for their playful and appealing dishes. This new venture is more of the same, but in a much grander setting.
Executive Chef Jordan Sclare has created an affordable, evolving a-la-carte menu designed to encourage a relaxed, sharing environment with dishes including Avocado Tempura with smoked purple potato; BBQ Pork Belly nashi pear salsa; Grilled Baby Chicken with spicy pomegranate salsa; BBQ specialties from the Robata Grill, and a selection of fresh, sustainably sourced sushi. The menu also features Nikkei tasting menus of seven courses from £35.
A striking salon tucked away in the heart of Rosewood London, the Mirror Room is the social hub of the hotel, offering innovative, elegant dining and afternoon tea.
A veritable jewel box of a dining room, with mirrors on the walls and ceiling, the tables are laid with exquisite Limoges china, sparkling crystal and refined silverware. Whether meeting for a relaxed breakfast, light lunch, afternoon tea or a decadent dinner, it is the place to see and be seen on High Holborn.
Grain Store, designed around the idea of an exploded kitchen, is located at the heart of King’s Cross. Bruno Loubert’s extensive travels mean that there are no geographical boundaries to the influences that have inspired the eclectic menu.
- German Gymnasium
Originally designed as the first purpose-built gym in England, this Grade II-listed building is conveniently situated in the heart of vibrant King’s Cross. German Gymnasium serves Mittel-European inspired dishes all day long, across two floors and out on its vast heated terraces
The Gilbert Scott, located in San Pancras, is an elegant British brasserie and bar. The restaurant offers an original take on nostalgic British classics, inspired by the pioneering and skilled cooks of old time England.
Mark Sargeant has arrived at Plum + Spilt Milk, creating a menu based on beautiful British ingredients cooked simply yet creatively. lum + Spilt Milk keeps service turning from dawn through to midnight. Floor-to-ceiling windows and hand-blown glass light bulbs warm a restaurant and dining room in a class all of its own.
Sustainability and environmental responsibility restaurant. The concept as a union of these ideals with great food and drink served in a relaxed ambience – a strong, seasonal restaurant rooted in sustainability.
Bibendum Oyster Bar specialises in the freshest seafood cuisine, set in stylish, comfortable surroundings. Dining at the Restaurant is a visual feast as well as a treat for the tastebuds. During the day, light streams through the spectacular stained glass windows, and the high-ceilinged Restaurant buzzes with reassuring activity. Comfy chairs and well-spaced tables add to the feeling of space.
One-O-One is highly rated as one of the top seafood restaurants in London. Set within the Sheraton Park Tower Hotel on the ground floor, the menu offers an outstanding range of fresh fish and seafood.

Located on the 38th and 39th floors of the Heron Tower, SushiSamba A delivers a unique blend of Japanese, Brazilian and Peruvian cuisine, culture, music and striking design to the City of London. Unclothed tables, tiled floors and tomato-red seating do nothing to distract from the views.
Featuring menus that aim to reflect head chef Solley’s East-London Jewish roots and reference Spitalfields’ history as a home for immigrants, Jago takes its name from the colloquial title reportedly given to the area between Shoreditch High Street and Spitalfields in the 1860s.
Upstairs at the Ten Bells is a restaurant based above the historic Spitalfields pub serving modern British, seasonal food. Initially started as a temporary, 3 month project by the Young Turks & The Clove Club it received an overwhelming response and is now permanent.
The Narrow Pub & Restaurant has retained the charm of a bygone era with flagstones, fireplaces and traditional good service. Expect to find classic pub dishes and real ales alongside good wines, all served with panoramic views of the River Thames.
The Grazing Goat is a light and airy pub/restaurant, which serves simple but neatly presented dishes such as chicken-liver parfait topped with melting red wine jelly or seared tuna with a smoked tomato sauce. Portions are generous, making it more feasting than grazing.
Gymkhana serves contemporary Indian cuisine using seasonal British ingredients, with a strong focus in the tandoori oven. The menu offers chatpatta sharing dishes in a convivial environment.. Reminiscent of the gymkhana clubs, the dining room is flanked by turned oak booths with marble tables and fluted, bitter chocolate leather banquettes.
Scotts is an elegant restaurant located on Mayfair’s Mount Street. The menu specialises in fish and shellfish but also offers a small choice of meat dishes. The interior decor features works of art by renowned artists such as Tracey Emin, Martin Creed and Damien Hirst.
Bar Boulud at Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park offers a seasonal bistro menu, which includes an impressive selection of house-made terrines and pâtés, as well as a handful of signature sausages and burgers, adding an American touch to this French bistro and wine bar.
Coya, a modern Peruvian restaurant, offers a menu that keeps traditional elements of Peruvian cooking alive while creating a contemporary cuisine for a modern London clientele. A highlight is the ox heart with parsley and ajírocoto. These traditional Peruvian recipes are complemented by the restaurant’s antique Peruvian furniture.
- Le Gavroche
Le Gavroche, located in a windowless basement with old-fashioned furnishings in Mayfair, was awarded 3 Michelin stars and is therefore testament to the excellence of the food being prepared by Michel Roux Jr. It is murmured to be ‘the ultimate fine-dining dream’.
Float up the winding staircase to the lustred dining room and look forward to the trademark Nobu mix of exquisite high-art sushi, salads and east/west crossovers, all overlaid with South American tacos, ceviches and grills.
The presentation of the perfectly balanced and not overpriced dishes at the Cuckoo Club is said to be faultless. Diners can expect a seasonal, sustainably sourced three course set menu of dishes, ri/ch and full of flavour, which are portioned well so you won’t feel stuffed at the end.

The Ledbury feels like a true neighbourhood eatery where the mood is genuinely ‘cool’. the Australian chef’s high-flying food is both intriguing and brilliantly inventive and the unmissable signature dish of flame-grilled mackerel with smooth avocado sauce is exquisit.
The Oak is reknown for its delicious wood fired pizzas, which are delicious but also offers an extensive seasonal menu. With inspiration from Mediterranean Italy and Spain as well as Southern France it reflects a love of honest, wholesome food flavours flavours.
The Shed is an extension of the rural lifestyle of two brothers of West Sussex. They have put together a fantastic daily-changing menu of Sussex produce, with a focus on using the whole animal (nose to tail cooking) so that nothing is wasted.
Blending modern Portuguese and Spanish cuisine, award-wining Portuguese chef Luis Baena focuses on the Atlantic facing regions of these two countries at his Notting Hill Kitchen restaurant.
Oxford Street/Regent Street
Bonnie Gull Seafood Shack is a clarion call to British Seafood, which offers a new approach to seafood in London; accessible, affordable, simple, fresh, responsibly sourced and 100% British!
MEATliquor is perhaps London’s hippest restaurant. Patties are 100% beef, topped with additions such as pickles, cheese, red onions, chilli… Other dishes include sweet and spicy buffalo wings, fried pickles and chilli dogs. MEATliquor is the closest you’ll get to a down ’n’ dirty diner this side of the Atlantic.

Peckham / Dulwich
This bustling, unpretentious Thai canteen produces enticing food, full of soft textures and spicy or cleansing flavours.. The well-balanced dishes on the one-page menu are designed to be shared. To finish, don’t miss Begging Bowl’s one and only dessert: creamy, lightly salted sticky rice topped with a perfectly ripe mango.
The odd name may be explained by its long opening hours – the restaurant opens for coffees and croissants at 7am on weekdays and closes at 1am at the weekend. The hipness quota really cranks up in the evening, attracting Peckham’s edgy art scene/boho crowd.
Toasted (or Toast “ED”, for East Dulwich) is the latest restaurant/wine bar in the Terroirs tradition, very casual and stripped back. the food is rather more special than you might expect. Unlike at Terroirs, the menu isn’t French. Instead it changes with what’s available, based around the best their butcher and fishmonger have to offer.
A ‘pan-Balkan’ part-time pop-up in Peckham – set in the elegant, Victorian bones of an old deli – has become a must-go place to eat. The owner, John Gionleka, has cleared out the deli counters to serve delicious dishes inspired by his native Albania, its Balkan neighbors and influences from further afield.
Caviar House & Prunier Piccadilly boasts a seafood bar which is an elegant place to dine with Caviar, Balik Salmon, Oysters, a selection of hot dishes, champagne, and an extensive wine selection with dishes unrivalled in central London.
Both menu and design of Chop Shop combines the spirited and edgy influences of New York and London, creating a lively neighborhood restaurant. The menu itself includes some Altamarea New York City favorites, including Morini Meatballs, the Patty Melt Burger Sandwich, as well as new collaborative dishes such as the Cottage Pasta Pie.
Sake no Hana offers modern authentic Japanese dining in the heart of Mayfair. A la carte menus provide a variety of hot and cold appetizers, charcoal grill, Toban and Kamameshi dishes, while sushi and sashimi are prepared to order at the sushi bar.
The Greenberry Café is Primrose Hill’s latest culinary hang out where you’ll find all day reasonably priced brasserie dining. The food combines comfort food with global dishes with a strong emphasis on provenance.
Bo London introduces Alvin’s signature cooking style, “X-treme Chinese” to the city, playing with ingredients and techniques with immeasurable precision and combining centuries old recipes with modern cooking methods.
Sketch’s gilded Lecture Room & Library remains an opulent pleasure palace where anything goes. This two Michelin starred fine dining restaurant, whose menu is devised by French Master Chef Pierre Gagnaire, offers a unique breadth of ingredients and a complexity of combinations.
With its light wood panelling, spindly chandeliers and a wine ‘corridor’, the dining room of Roux at the Landau is very welcoming. Beef from the lunchtime trolley comes highly commended, elegantly presented and served with poise.
Bacchus Pub and Kitchen serves the best of British cooking, taking eating out back to its roots of unpretentious service, in relaxed surroundings. Sustainability, seasonality and provenance is everything to Bacchus when sourcing supplies and creating menus.
Beagle is a restaurant, bar and coffee shop located next to Hoxton Station, which offers an honest, homely menu using the best of British produce. Pig’s head croquette with gribiche and whole wild sea bass with samphire & cucumber are just a few of the menu highlights.
The doors of the Bistrotheque open to a buzzing industrial-chic space, with white tiled walls, vintage chandeliers, square marble tables and dark wooden chairs. While the space evokes a Brooklyn eaterie, the menu is influenced by French and British cuisine.
A contemporary bar and eatery serving breakfast, lunch, dinner & cocktails. Our menu boasts eggs benedicts, superfood salads, charcoal bun sandwiches, and asian spiced whisky glazed rotisserie chicken.

Despite a single-item menu (shoulder cut of beef), Flat Iron is anything but snooty, with smiling service, communal tables and a downstairs bar serving St John’s famous custard doughnuts alongside cocktails. Flat Iron is an affordable treat for young-at-heart Londoners.
The MASH menu features premium quality steaks from some of the world’s finest cattle. Whether you’re looking for dry-aged Danish beef, a fantastic piece of Wagyu, tender corn-fed American beef or specially selected Uruguay Hereford beef the MASH menu never fails to impress.
Randall & Aubin is not just a Champagne and oyster bar. It serves up the freshest seafood and succulent roasts as well as classic French and British dishes. The ‘Daily Specials’ menu, which takes its inspiration from the freshest seasonal produce available each day is said to be exquisit.
With its hip decor of antique clocks, quirky portraits and flashes of neon, Social Eating House offers a menu of hearty food. Presentation is a strong point at Social Eating House, the desserts also showing inventiveness, imagination and attention to detail.
Spuntino is a retro American joint located in a former butcher’s shop, which partly alleviates the feeling you’re in a theme restaurant. The menu offers a carefully constructed London take on a New York take on road-food and Italian classics. Classics include the no frills mac ’n’ cheese and the more cultured mackerel, saffron and broad beans.
There’s no sign above the door, no flashy exterior. Just an A-board advertising ‘Japanese Tapas and Ramen’.Much of Kikuchi’s menu is themed around obanzai – a traditional home-cooking style from Japan.
Wright Brothers seafood restaurant in Soho offers diners the finest, fresh day boat fish and shellfish, mainly sourced from Cornish fishermen. The Oyster House feel with high table communal seating and an open-plan kitchen, makes for a fantastic experience.
Assado is a Portuguese word meaning ‘Roast’. It is also a traditional Portuguese recipe, hence Assado’s signature dish: the Pulled Pork Assado. Specials will be available on an ad hoc basis, according to calendar events. Customers can come to Assado for exceptional food without the unnecessary hassle of pre-booking. Assado is perfect for hungry Londoners who like quick service without compromising on quality.
Village East is a funky eatery that serves a US-style brunch and hangover-friendly lunch dishes. The raised dining room offers a seasonal menu highlighting eclectic combos such as crispy pork cheeks with sauce gribiche or a warm salad of squid and chorizo.
Champor-Champor restaurant in Southwark, London SE1, offers a unique Asian dining experience. Located between London Bridge and Tower Bridge, on the South Bank of the River Thames, the Thai-Malay cuisine draws in both locals and visitors alike.
Seafood is definitely the name of the game at this family-run outfit, which has been pleasing Borough market-goers and tourists who drop by for many years now. Comprising a fishmonger’s and café under one roof. The menu changes each day, depending on the catch – oysters, prawns, tuna, sea bass… – and dishes are accompanied by vegetables from the market where appropriate.

Located in the Savoy, Kaspar offers an informal yet luxurious dining experience, in an elegant 1920’s setting. The menu offers arrays of fresh and smoked fish, oysters, caviar and fresh seafood. Make sure you conclude with the Gooseberry and Amaretto trifle.
